If you’re scrolling through gaming forums or your social media feed right now, there’s a high chance you’ve stumbled on a viral post claiming the next Grand Theft Auto installment is finally available. You might even have typed did gta 6 come out today into your search bar to cut through the noise, and we get it — the hype for this game has been building for more than a decade, since GTA 5 first launched back in 2013. False release claims pop up every few weeks, and it can be hard to tell which updates are real and which are just clickbait or fan-made hoaxes. This guide breaks down all the latest official news, how to spot fake launch announcements, and what you can expect in the lead-up to the actual release.
Did GTA 6 Come Out Today? Breaking Down The Latest Official Status
If you’ve found yourself asking did gta 6 come out today after seeing a viral post, you’re far from the only one. The short answer is no, GTA 6 has not launched as of today, and there is no surprise drop planned for any date before the confirmed 2025 release window. Rockstar has never announced a surprise same-day launch for any major GTA title, so you can rule out any unannounced drops entirely. I’ve covered Rockstar game launches for 8 years, and the closest they ever came to a short-notice drop was for GTA Online’s major Cayo Perico Heist DLC, and even that was announced two full weeks before it went live. The first GTA 6 trailer dropped in December 2023, and a second trailer released in late 2024 confirmed the 2025 console launch window, with no specific date shared yet. Pre-orders have not opened either, so any listing claiming to sell early copies is not legitimate.
Common Fake GTA 6 Launch Claims You Should Ignore
Most of these posts are designed specifically to make you search did gta 6 come out today and click through to their low-quality sites or scam links. Fake claims usually spike around major gaming events like The Game Awards, Gamescom, or even random dates that fans speculate could be a launch day. The most common types of hoaxes you’ll see include:
- Edited social media posts from fake Rockstar accounts that mimic the official branding, often posted on X or TikTok to go viral and drive ad revenue for the poster
- Fan-made game clips that mod GTA 5 to look like GTA 6, passed off as early access gameplay from a surprise launch that only a small group of users have access to
- Phishing links that claim to let you download GTA 6 early, which actually install malware, steal your gaming account credentials, or trick you into paying for a fake copy of the game
What Confirmed GTA 6 Details We Have Right Now
While we don’t have an exact release date yet, Rockstar has shared a lot of official details about the game to build hype ahead of launch. The game is set in Vice City and the surrounding fictional state of Leonida, and follows two playable protagonists, Jason and Lucia, marking the first time a mainline GTA game has featured a female lead character. The game will launch first on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with a PC release expected 12 to 18 months after the console launch, following the same release pattern Rockstar used for GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. I’ve gone through both official trailers frame by frame, and there are small details that confirm the game will have dynamic weather, destructible environments, and a wider range of side activities than GTA 5, from street racing to small business management. Rockstar has also confirmed that GTA 6 will feature regular post-launch content updates, similar to the ongoing support for GTA Online, so the game will keep getting new content for years after its initial release. We’re expecting the exact launch date to be announced in the first half of 2025, along with pre-order details and information about special edition versions of the game.
How To Get Real GTA 6 Launch Alerts As Soon As They Drop
You won’t have to keep searching did gta 6 come out today every few days if you set up official alerts directly from the source. Follow only the official Rockstar Games X (Twitter) account and their official news page for updates — any major announcement about GTA 6 will be posted there first, no other source will have early information before Rockstar makes it public. You can also sign up for the official Rockstar newsletter if you want email alerts the second news drops, so you don’t have to check social media every day. If you prefer to get updates from gaming outlets, stick to trusted publications with a track record of accurate Rockstar coverage, rather than random social media influencers who often post unconfirmed rumors for clicks. If you do see a launch claim that seems too good to be true, cross-check it with the official Rockstar account first — if there’s no matching post there, the claim is fake. When pre-orders do open, they will only be available through official platform storefronts (PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Rockstar Store) and authorized retailers, so never buy from third-party sellers who claim to have early copies.
At the end of the day, if you’re still asking did gta 6 come out today, the short answer is no — but the wait is almost over. Rockstar’s 2025 release window is just around the corner, and we’re expecting more big updates, including a final release date, in the first half of the year. Don’t fall for scams or fake claims, stick to official sources, and you’ll be the first to know when the game is finally available to play. It’s been a long wait for GTA fans, but all signs point to the game being worth every extra month of patience.
