If you’re anything like me, you probably sat down to play GTA 6 for the first time with a rough plan to blast through the story as fast as possible, only to get distracted by a random street race, a stranger yelling for help on the side of the road, or the urge to rob a bank just for fun. I spent my first three hours of playtime doing everything but advancing the main plot, and by the time I got to the third story mission, I was already curious how many missions are in gta 6 total, so I could plan out my playthrough. Rockstar has always packed GTA games with tons of optional content on top of the core story, and this entry is no exception, with enough missions to keep you busy for weeks if you want to see everything the map has to offer.
How Many Missions Are in GTA 6 Main Story?
Let’s start with the core content that every player will experience, no matter what choices they make. The main story of GTA 6 has between 82 and 86 missions, depending on small branching choices you make early in the plot. These missions follow the dual arcs of Lucia and Jason, the game’s two playable protagonists, as they climb the ranks of Vice City’s criminal underworld. Some missions are exclusive to one character: for example, Lucia’s parole check-in missions only trigger when you’re playing as her, and Jason’s street racing side arc missions only unlock when you’re controlling him. You won’t miss any critical story beats if you pick one character over the other for most of the game, but switching between them regularly will let you see small, fun character moments that you’d otherwise skip. Rockstar confirmed in a post-launch update that the flexible mission count is intentional, designed to reward players who take the time to talk to NPCs and explore small dialogue choices instead of skipping cutscenes. The longest stretch of consecutive main missions comes in the final act of the game, where you’ll have 12 back-to-back heist and escape missions that lead up to the final ending choice.
Optional Side Missions Worth Adding to Your Playthrough
If you only play the main story, you’re missing more than half of what GTA 6 has to offer. The game is packed with optional side missions that add depth to the world, introduce memorable side characters, and even give you access to exclusive weapons, vehicles, and cash bonuses that make the main story easier. You don’t have to complete any side missions to finish the main story, but many add critical context for the game's biggest plot twists. The side content is split into a few clear categories, so you can pick what fits your playstyle:
- Stranger and Freak missions: 32 total, each with unique story arcs for side characters across Vice City and the surrounding swamps. Some of these arcs last 3 or 4 missions, and a few even tie directly into the main story’s final act.
- Heist prep optional missions: 17 total, that reduce risk and increase payout for core story heists if you complete them first. You can skip these, but you’ll have a much higher chance of failing heists if you don’t do the prep work first.
- Hobby and activity missions: 44 total, covering everything from street racing to deep sea fishing, private security contracts, and even local radio station side quests that have you tracking down lost music tapes.
- Secret unlockable missions: 8 total, only accessible if you hit specific milestones like reaching max reputation with a local gang or finding all hidden collectibles across the map.
I skipped most of the heist prep missions on my first playthrough because I wanted to get to the big heist fast, and I ended up failing the heist three times before I finally got through it. On my second run, I did all the prep missions first, and I beat the heist on my first try with double the cash payout, so it’s definitely worth the extra time if you don’t mind a longer playthrough.
Factors That Change Your Total Mission Count
A lot of players are surprised when they compare their total mission count with a friend and find the numbers don’t match, even if you both beat the main story. That’s totally normal, because there are a few key factors that change how many missions you can access in a single playthrough. Choices you make in the first 10 missions of the game can alter your total mission count by up to 4 by the end of the story. For example, if you choose to help a local drug dealer in one of the early optional story missions, you’ll unlock three extra missions working for his crew later in the game, but you’ll lose access to two missions working for a rival gang. It’s a tradeoff, and there’s no right or wrong choice, just different content to explore. If you play co-op with a friend, there are also 12 exclusive co-op only missions that don’t count towards your single player total, so you can add those to your count if you usually play with other people. I missed 3 of the secret unlockable missions on my first playthrough because I rushed the main story and didn’t collect any of the hidden VHS tapes, so my first run only had 172 total missions, while my second 100% run had 211 total missions across main and side content. The only way to see every mission in the game is to play through the story at least twice, picking different choices each time.
How Long It Takes to Complete Every GTA 6 Mission
Now that you know how many missions there are, you’re probably wondering how much time you’ll need to set aside to beat them all. The answer depends entirely on how much content you want to play, and how fast you usually get through open world games. New players should budget at least 30 hours to get through the main story without rushing cutscenes or skipping dialogue. If you skip all cutscenes and focus only on mission objectives, you can beat the main story in as little as 22 hours, but you’ll miss most of the story and character development that makes GTA 6 so good. If you play the main story plus most of the popular side content, like the Stranger and Freak missions and heist prep, you’re looking at 60 to 70 hours of playtime. If you want to 100% the game, including every side mission, collectible, and secret mission, you’ll need between 120 and 150 hours of playtime, depending on your skill level. You can cut down playtime by 10-15% if you turn off assisted driving and aim assists, as you'll complete mission objectives faster without the game slowing you down. I turned off all assists on my second playthrough, and I shaved almost 8 hours off my total playtime for the main story, even though I did all the side content too. Just don’t turn off assists if you’re new to GTA games, because the driving and shooting can feel pretty unforgiving at first.
When it's all said and done, there's no one-size-fits-all answer to how many missions are in gta 6, and that's part of the fun. If you're just here for the core crime story, you can blast through 80-something missions in a long weekend. If you want to explore every corner of Vice City and see every piece of content Rockstar built, you've got over 200 missions to work through, plus hundreds of smaller random events that don't count as formal missions but add even more depth to the world. You don't have to hit a specific mission count to have fun with the game, either. I still log in a few times a week just to do random security contracts or race with friends, even though I 100%ed the game months ago. At the end of the day, the best playthrough is the one that fits what you want to get out of the game.
