Ever since Rockstar first confirmed GTA 6 would be set in a modern version of Vice City, long-time franchise fans have been obsessed with one question more than almost any other: is Tommy Vercetti in GTA 6? The sharp-suited, Hawaiian-shirt wearing anti-hero of the 2002 classic Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is one of the most beloved characters in the entire series, so it makes sense that players would hope to see him make a return to the city he once ruled. We’ve sifted through every official trailer, verified developer leak, and Rockstar public statement to separate fan fiction from confirmed fact in this guide.
Official Rockstar Hints That Reference Tommy Vercetti in GTA 6 Trailers
The first GTA 6 trailer, released in late 2023, was packed with tiny Easter eggs that nod to the original Vice City, and several of them reference Tommy Vercetti directly. If you pause the trailer at the 1 minute 12 second mark, you can see a faded billboard for the Vercetti Estate peeking out behind a new luxury condo development. Later in the trailer, a cutaway of a downtown nightclub shows a plaque in the lobby that lists “Tommy V” as the original founder of the venue. Easter eggs referencing classic GTA characters are a staple of Rockstar's open world design, so these nods are definitely intentional, even if they don’t confirm Tommy is an active character in the story.
It’s important to keep the timeline in mind too. The original Vice City was set in 1986, when Tommy was in his early 30s. GTA 6 is set in the 2020s, which means Tommy would be in his late 70s or early 80s during GTA 6's timeline, so he wouldn’t be the fast-talking, ruthless criminal players remember from the 2002 game. Rockstar has never commented directly on these Easter eggs, but they’ve never denied that Tommy exists in the modern Vice City canon either.
Why Many Fans Believe Tommy Vercetti Won't Appear In GTA 6
A lot of casual fans spend their downtime between new GTA 6 leak drops playing casual games to pass the wait, discussing theories in gaming communities between rounds. Many of these communities have dedicated threads where players vote on the most likely classic character cameos, and most regulars agree that Tommy's return is unlikely for a few key reasons. For example, a lot of players who frequent GTA fan groups mention they often hop on Rummy77 for quick casual matches while waiting for new storyline leaks to drop, and most of the fan discussions there lean away from Tommy being a featured character.
The main reasons most fans and analysts rule out a meaningful Tommy appearance are:
That doesn’t mean we won’t get more references to him, though. We could easily see his name on buildings, hear NPCs talk about the old Vice City kingpin, or even find his old mansion as a visitable location in the open world. It just means he almost certainly won’t be a mission giver, playable character, or core part of the main storyline.
Unverified Leaks That Claim Tommy Vercetti Has a Cameo Role
Over the last two years, dozens of unconfirmed leaks have popped up claiming Tommy will make some sort of appearance in GTA 6. One of the most widely shared leaks came from a user who correctly revealed the exact release date of the first GTA 6 trailer three months before it dropped. That user claimed early builds of the game had a 10-second cameo of Tommy sitting in a private booth at the Malibu Club, but the scene was cut shortly after Liotta’s death out of respect.
Another popular leak that circulated on TikTok last year claimed Tommy would appear as a side character who gives players a handful of missions focused on reclaiming his old business territories from new gangs. That leak was later proven to be fake, created by a fan who edited screenshots from a Vice City mod into GTA 6 trailer footage. None of these leaks have been confirmed by Rockstar or any of their official development partners, so take all of them with a huge grain of salt.
Even if one of these leaks is partially true, any appearance would almost certainly be a tiny, blink-and-you-miss-it Easter egg, not a meaningful role with dialogue or story impact. Rockstar is very careful about how they handle legacy characters, and they wouldn’t waste Tommy’s return on a throwaway side role unless it served the main story perfectly.
What a Potential Tommy Vercetti Appearance Could Look Like If It Happens
If Rockstar did decide to include Tommy in GTA 6 in some capacity, there are a few ways they could do it respectfully without recasting Liotta. The most likely option is a silent visual cameo: you might walk past a fancy oceanfront restaurant and see an old man in a white Hawaiian shirt sitting at a private table by the window, surrounded by bodyguards, with no dialogue or interaction with the main characters. That would be a fun nod for long-time fans without disrespecting Liotta’s legacy.
Another possible option is that we get to explore the Vercetti Estate as a hidden location in the open world, filled with Easter eggs that reference Tommy’s story from the original Vice City. We could find old photos of him and Ken Rosenberg on his desk, his classic Hawaiian shirt hanging in his closet, or old cassette tapes of 1980s rock music on his office table. Rockstar would never give him a speaking role without Liotta's family's approval, which they haven’t mentioned receiving in any public statements so far.
There’s also a small chance Tommy could be referenced in post-launch DLC, but even that is unlikely. Rockstar’s post-launch content for recent GTA games has focused almost entirely on new stories and characters, not callbacks to older titles. If you’re holding out hope for a Tommy Vercetti appearance, you’re better off adjusting your expectations to fun Easter eggs rather than a full on return.
At the end of the day, the answer to is Tommy Vercetti in GTA 6 is almost certainly no, at least not as a core character with a speaking role. We’ll almost certainly get dozens of Easter eggs referencing his reign over Vice City, but don’t expect to see him interacting with Lucia or Jason in the main storyline. Whatever Rockstar has planned, the nods to classic Vice City are sure to make long-time fans happy, even if Tommy himself doesn’t make an on-screen appearance.
